Native to the Mediterranean climate, with wet winters and dry summers, this carnivorous plant is also distinguished by its honey smell which attracts prey. Its sticky leaves trap insects with its mucilage, and it provides visual appeal when blooming with yellow flowers. Due to its unique growing requirements, growing Drosophyllum lusitanicum differs from most other carnivorous plants.
Cultivation and Maintenance:
Substrate: Mix equal parts of Blonde Peat, Perlite and Sand. You can also add vermiculite.
Pot and container: Very popular large pot, preferably terracotta or plastic which is suitable. Repotting should be avoided. When you purchase you receive a Drosophyllum lusitanicum with its final pot, you can repot at your own risk by cutting the plastic pot.
Watering: With a well-drained substrate, do not soak the pot for long periods for adult plants.
From spring to summer, wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering, or make sure that the saucer/tray that contains the water is empty before filling it. We will water either by capillary action or on the surface.
From fall until the end of winter, watering will be very rare. I recommend 1 to 2 times a month by capillarity, letting the pot soak for 1 hour, then removing it from its saucer/tray which contains the water.
Water : Demineralized water, reverse osmosis, rain, ZeroWater (less than 50 ppm).
Winter and summer: Protect the Drosophyllum lusitanicum from frost, supports low temperatures, in summer it is left in full sun, supports temperatures over 40° with a very dry substrate.
